This is the most popular method of waxing. It consists of resin, paraffin wax, glucose syrup and honey. Warm wax is smoothed onto the skin in a thin layer and immediately covered with a fabric or paper strip which is pressed/rubbed onto the waxed area before being removed in a quick swipe. Strip waxing is quicker than hot wax and larger areas can be waxed at one go.
Tips for preparing to bare:
Half an hour before you go for a waxing, particularly the bikini, Brazilian or Hollywood wax, many regulars recommend taking a couple of regular painkillers in order to help desensitise the skin, although as the pain is external rather than internal some therapists aren’t convinced this works.
As our pain threshold is at its lowest during menstruation, it’s best to avoid this time when booking your wax. Lack of sleep and excessive alcohol the night before can lead to more pain as well
Make sure that the area to be waxed is clean and has no broken skin, scratches or bruising.
Your hair should be around ½ inch long in order for the wax to be able to grip sufficiently.
After Waxing: Some people find the area slightly red and there may be blood spots occasionally, or a stinging sensation. These are all normal reactions and will subside in a few hours. Often, the therapist will use tea tree lotion to sooth the area afterwards and/or apply a cold compress to ease redness if necessary.
Bikini Wax – Perfect if you’re looking to neaten up hair growth visible outside of the panty line.
Brazilian – If you’ve ever seen the itsy bitsy bikinis that the women wear in Rio, Brazil, you’ll understand where the Brazilian style wax got its name! For those women who enjoy wearing skimpy bikinis and undies, then this is the one for you. A slim strip of hair is left down the centre of the pubic area, a couple of centimetres above the vagina. You may be given disposable knickers but it is easier if you avoid underwear altogether. You can then decide on how wide you’d like the strip of hair by talking with your therapist. Before wax is applied, the hair may be snipped shorter to make it easier for the wax to reach the hair follicle and for this procedure, because there is a larger area to remove than there is for a standard bikini wax, the wax is smoothed on and removed a bit at a time.
You or the therapist will pull the skin taught around the area to be waxed before the therapist whips away the wax. If there are any stray stragglers, the therapist will tweeze them out. Hair is also removed from around the underneath of the vagina. Although it may be painful during the first treatment, clients say that subsequent Brazilians hurt less.
Hollywood – One for the women who like to feel bare down there. It’s becoming more popular and many clients choose this as they feel it is hygienic and they prefer the no hair look. The Hollywood follows the same procedures as the Brazilian but the whole vaginal and pubic area is left hair free after treatment.
TOP TIP: While the therapist applies the wax, take deep breaths and exhale sharply when each strip is pulled away. This is a tried and tested way of keeping pain to a minimum!
Areas that can be waxed: Waxing is a quick and efficient hair removal option for all body and face areas. Back and chest waxing is particularly popular for men.
